Can A Robot Lawnmower Make Gardening A Whole Lot Easier?

What’s the worst job in the gardening world?

Okay, yes, de-weeding is the most stressful job, but what comes in at a close second? That’s right, mowing the lawn!

Cutting your lawn can take a very long time, especially if you have a large garden. Plus, you have the front and back gardens to contend with, meaning you might be out there for over an hour pushing a lawnmower around. As well as taking up a lot of your time, it consumes much of your energy. Sure, this is good exercise, but it can lead to back and joint pains if you’re not careful.

This is why a lot of people will get their kids to cut the grass, allowing themselves to focus on the smaller gardening tasks – like pruning plants, watering things, and so on. But, there’s another solution that could make gardening a whole lot easier for you: robot lawnmowers.

What are robot lawnmowers?

You’ve most likely heard of Roombas, right? These are the little robot vacuums that bump around your home and suck up a lot of dirt and hair. They’ve been around for a long time, and they actually encouraged the development of robot lawnmowers.

In essence, it’s the same thing, only this robotic device comes with blades on the bottom to cut your lawn. When turned on, it will roam around your garden area, cutting the grass without you needing to do anything. You can sit on your deck and watch it zoom around, or you can spend time on other gardening tasks.

How do robot lawnmowers work?

The technology behind robot lawnmowers is slightly different from that of a robot vacuum. Yes, both devices use sensors to avoid crashing into things, but there’s one main problem with having a robot in your garden. What if it goes over your boundaries and drives into the road? Well, as explained on the Redback Tools website, robot lawnmowers need an extra bit of installation work before you use them. Effectively, you install a boundary wire around your garden. The lawnmower then cuts close to the wire on its first go round your garden, before docking in its station.

Then, it is released back into your garden, but it detects the electromagnetic energy from the wire. As a result, it knows to not go beyond the wiring, bouncing itself back into the garden and cutting in random directions. This ensures that all areas of your lawn are cut evenly and that your lawnmower doesn’t drive off into the street!

What are the advantages of a robot lawnmower?

The main advantage is that it helps you save a lot of time. This gives you opportunities to do other gardening tasks or to just relax and enjoy yourself. In terms of garden maintenance, this can mean that you take better care of your garden area. You aren’t spending over an hour a week cutting the lawn, so other tasks don’t end up getting neglected. Overall, it could lead to a much neater garden that stays gorgeous all throughout the year.

Plus, one good thing about robot lawnmowers is that they don’t produce any emissions. Yes, you can get electric lawnmowers as well, but this will also use up less electricity, cutting your energy bills.

What are the downsides of a robot lawnmower?

One possible downside is that you might get weird patterns on your lawn. The mower will cut randomly, so you have to hope that every single blade is trimmed, or else you might have strange markings on your lawn.

Also, if you have a very big garden, there’s no guarantee that the battery life can last to cut the whole thing. Of course, it depends on the model you choose, but it might mean that you have to deal with a half-cut lawn until the lawnmower recharges again.

Finally, there is the price issue. Robot lawnmowers do tend to be more expensive than standard push lawnmowers. This is because of the technology needed, and the fact you also need the extra boundary wire installed.

Overall, can a robot lawnmower make gardening a whole lot easier? Well, yes, it certainly can. Anything you can do to reduce your time spent doing gardening tasks will be a big victory. If you can afford to invest in one, it might be the best decision you’ve ever made. However, if you have a small lawn that doesn’t take long to be cut, it’s probably not worth paying for a robot lawnmower. It all depends on how much time you spend mowing your lawn!
